Why Use Natural Science Illustration?
Illustration is able to “see into” the parts of a structure that photography and editing can’t capture, making it a better tool for educational images. Adding visual aids to research articles can increase the likelihood of being published.
It can also be used to speculate the appearance of a species or a stage of life that is extinct or rarely visually documented. Scientific and nature illustrators work often with palaeontologists and other scientists to visually re-construct various creatures.
Natural science illustration features life-like illustrations that communicate complex information in an engaging and simple manner. These can be but are not limited to: infographic pieces, realistic depictions of a plant or animal species, or an illustration of a life cycle.
About the Artist
I have a love for nature and an eye for detail. Growing up in the countryside north of Kingston, Ontario, I was constantly surrounded by bugs, plants, and animals. These formative experiences evolved into a passion for science and nature illustration. I especially enjoy highlighting lesser-known native and endangered species in my work.
Animals have always been my favourite thing to draw. As a child, I even wanted to be a palaeontologist! Although I chose to take the artistic route for my career, I am incredibly curious and want to continue learning about our world and the creatures in it. When I'm not painting, you can find me buried under blankets on the couch, crocheting for my friends and listening to heavy metal music.
